Our Newest Eagle Scouts

Troop 27 Awards Eagle Rank to 7 Scouts

Troop 27 Eagle Scouts - 2015 Eagle Court of Honor
Troop 27 of Fox Island recently awarded the rank of Eagle to seven of its members:
From Left: Thomas Ichiyama, Mitchell Baltmiskis, Ian Collins, Mason Yonkers,
Matthew Wild, Jarrett Siler and Daniel Crone.

Mitchell Baltmiskis Makes Eagle!

Mitchell Baltmiskis - Eagle Scout
Mitchell Baltmiskis, Troop 27's twentieth Eagle Scout, passed his board of review on February 18, 2015.  He is the first Scout in Troop 27 to complete his Eagle Scout requirements in 2015, and the last Scout to reach the rank of Eagle under the direction of Scoutmaster John Ohlson.

Eagle Scout Projects Enhance Fox Island Community Spaces

Eagle Scout Candidate Daniel Crone Completes Work on
New Potting Shed for Community Garden

Eagle Scout Candidate Daniel Crone of Fox Island's Troop 27 completed work today on a new potting shed for the Fox Island Community Garden, as his Eagle Service Project. The shed was donated by a fellow gardener, and Daniel & his crew of helpers reconstructed it on the garden site off 9th Avenue.

Mason Yonkers' Eagle service project consisted of extending the irrigation system for the Fox Island Community Garden this summer.

With the expansion of the garden by over 50% as a result of another Troop 27 Eagle project, the existing irrigation system was inadequate to serve the new garden plots.

Mason extended the existing water line, and added three new faucets, allowing for more sprinklers and hoses to run concurrently.

This summer has been a busy one for Fox Island's Troop 27 Boy Scouts!

Senior Patrol Leader Matthew W. recently completed his Eagle Project by adding a new trail connecting the Fox Island Sandspit to the upper parking lot.

This re-routes foot traffic from the parking lot out of the street on Island Blvd. through the woods, making for a safer and shorter route to the park gate area.

Ian C. took on another of three Eagle Projects this summer at the Fox Island Sandspit, enhancing and re-routing the trail from the Demolay clubhouse area to the beach.

The old trail followed a straight, downhill path, which became muddy and slippery in the winter.  The new trail has added switchbacks, making the slope more gentle and less slippery.

Jarrett S. completed the Sandspit trail expansion project by clearing out some overgrown beach area near the end of Ian's trail, and built two picnic tables for the Fox Island Sandspit.

The area was previously overrun by blackberries, and had taken over more than half of the lawn area near the Southwest corner of the park.

The new tables compliment the other two picnic tables built in 2012 by Spencer G., also of Troop 27.

The Troop 27 Scouts wrapped up the summer projects with a landscaping project at the Fox Island Post Office.

The grassy strip in front of the Post Office had become overgrown and unmanageable, so the Postmaster asked the Scouts if they could clear out the brush and weeds, and get some mulch in place to prevent them from growing back.

The project was completed in two weekends, with volunteers and parents from Troop 27.

Zog's at the Fox Island Deli Now Open!

Zog's on Fox IslandFox Island Store owner Dwayne Herzog has finished his 'last gift to Fox Island': Zog's on Fox Island, a much needed public gathering place, where residents can sip wine, have a beer, and a snack while listening to piped-in music, and enjoying the bubbling fountains and waterfalls in the newest addition to the Store & Deli complex.

See more about Zog's here

Troop 27 Eagle Candidate Builds Community Garden Expansion

Ian attaches the deer screen to a fence post, putting the finishing touches on his Eagle Scout service project.
Scouts from Fox Island's Troop 27, led by Eagle Scout Ian Nation, recently built a new deer fence to expand the footprint of the Fox Island Community Garden.

The expansion adds an additional 45' x 70' plot to the popular garden, which provides gardening space for Island residents who do not have sufficient space in their own yards for gardening.

Fox Island Cub Scouts Recruiting New Members

and are recruiting new members for the 2014 - 2015 School year.

Fox Island Sandspit Update

Fox Island Scouts clean up sandspit propertyThe Sandspit is now open to the public.
Visitors are encouraged to respect the privacy of neighbors, carry out dog droppings and trash, and park in designated areas.  Continued public use of the property is dependent upon good stewardship by the public, so please keep this area open by doing your part to keep the sandspit clean and safe.

Troop 27 Boy Scouts and Crew 27's Venturers are currently working on trail improvements, brush removal and cleanup of the property and storage buildings.  Several Eagle Scout projects have been underway at the spit recently, adding picnic tables, park benches a new staircase to the beach, and other improvements.

Scouts from Venture Crew 27 removed moss from the roof of the old Demolay Clubhouse building recently.

About 50 people attended the PenMet Parks Board meeting on August 20th, where they took feedback from the public regarding the closure, and future plans for use of the property.  Virtually everyone present was supportive of keeping the spit open to the public, except for one person.

Click for larger imagePenMet Board member Todd Iversen made a motion to spend money to install improved signage at the property, to help make people aware of the private property on either side of the spit, and the park hours & other restrictions.  Discussion took place about the main issue concerning the neighbors; the lack of onsite parking.

PenMet is seeking some evidence of previous parking on the upper lot at the spit property, that will allow the use of onsite parking in the future.  If you have photos or any recollection of cars parking there, please contact PenMet parks.
